Southern Spain
A journey through Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Córdoba, and Barcelona, exploring the rich history and vibrant culture of Andalusia and beyond.
Southern Spain was a journey through history, art, and incredible landscapes. From the royal streets of Madrid to the heart of Andalusia and the vibrant energy of Barcelona, it was a trip that showcased the diverse and beautiful spirit of the country.
From the Airport to the Capital: Madrid
A long journey from Montreal to the heart of Spain.
My trip to Spain began with a long journey, flying from Montreal to Barcelona with a layover in Zurich. As soon as I landed in Barcelona, I hopped on a high-speed train to Madrid. It was a whirlwind of travel, but I was excited to finally arrive in the Spanish capital and settle in.
The Historic Heart of Spain: Toledo
A step back in time in the ancient city of Toledo.
From Madrid, I took a short train ride to Toledo. This ancient walled city, a former capital of Spain, felt like a living museum. I spent my time there wandering through its narrow, winding streets, soaking in centuries of history.
The Soul of Andalusia: Granada
Exploring the vibrant streets and Moorish influence of Granada.
After a brief return to Madrid to catch another train, I headed south to Granada. The city’s energy was captivating, with its stunning Moorish architecture and lively tapas culture. It was a beautiful introduction to the soul of Andalusia.
The Great Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
Witnessing the unique blend of cultures in one incredible building.
My next stop was Córdoba, a city I was eager to visit mainly for its famous Mosque-Cathedral. The building was even more breathtaking in person—a stunning testament to the region’s complex history and the blend of Islamic and Christian influences.
Barcelona and the Mountains of Montserrat
Ending the trip with city vibes and a mountain retreat.
I ended my Spanish adventure in Barcelona. After several days of exploring the city’s unique art and architecture, I took a full-day trip to the mountains of Montserrat. The scenery was spectacular, and visiting the winery was a perfect, relaxing end to the trip before my flight home.
