My trip to Southern France was a whirlwind of beautiful cities, delicious food, and unexpected adventures. From reuniting with friends in Bordeaux to getting lost on the railway, it was a journey that reminded me of both the joys and challenges of solo travel. I had visited Toulouse just six months earlier and was looking forward to exploring it again, but my plans took a few detours.

Bordeaux & St-Émilion: Wine, Friends, and Pastries

Reuniting with friends and tasting the region's famous delicacies.

My journey began in Toulouse, but I didn’t stay long. I hopped straight on a train to Bordeaux to meet up with some old friends. We spent our time exploring the city’s elegant streets and, of course, indulging in the local cuisine. I finally got to try an authentic Canelé, and it was every bit as delicious as I had imagined. The next day, we took a short trip to the charming medieval village of St-Émilion, famous for its wine and the original Macaron, another treat I was happy to tick off my list.

Montpellier & Nîmes: A Glimpse of History

Exploring the vibrant streets of Montpellier and the Roman heritage of Nîmes.

After three wonderful days in Bordeaux, I took a train to Montpellier. I spent the day wandering through its lively city center. From there, I took another train to Nîmes, a beautiful city steeped in Roman history. The ancient architecture was incredible, and it felt like stepping back in time.

The Long Way Home: A Comedy of Errors

A series of travel mishaps on my way back to Toulouse.

The journey back to Toulouse was where things got interesting. Tired and distracted after a day of exploring, I boarded the wrong train from Montpellier—heading to Paris instead of Toulouse. I realized my mistake and hopped off in Nîmes, where I had to find a place to sleep for the night.

The next morning, I caught an early train, hoping for a smooth ride since my flight was later that day. Of course, the train was delayed for three hours due to an accident at the Matabiau station in Toulouse. Thankfully, I still had just enough time to visit a favorite crepe restaurant from a previous trip before rushing to the airport. I had been looking forward to seeing Toulouse again, and while it wasn’t the reunion I’d planned, the brief walk through downtown was a sweet end to an eventful trip.
